Sossusvlei Region in Namibia

The region directly bordering Sossusvlei is part of various private properties, as the "vlei" is located in the Namib-Naukluft National Park. The dunes of Sossusvlei is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Namibia.

This scenic region does not just consist of the majestic and famous high red dunes, but also the Naukluft Mountains and semi-desert sections. All home to various desert dwelling wildlife species such as Oryx, Springbok, Ostrich and even the endangered cheetah. The mountainous sections bordering on the desert has baboons, hyrax, leopard and caracal.

As with all tourist regions in Namibia, it has a very wide selection of accommodation options ranging from well facilitated camping sites, mid-range and standard lodges, to various exclusive luxury lodges. There are a few tourist traps that should be avoided, but the general standard is quite high.

The Sossusvlei area is about 4 hours drive from Windhoek via Rehoboth, and about 5 to 6 hours from Swakopmund via the Kuiseb Canyons.

If driving in from the coast via the Kuiseb and Gaub Canyon road (C 14), care should be taken, as it is an gravel road, and the canyon sections could be very dangerous. Remember! Speed and gravel roads do not go together.
